Palmetto Island State Park

Set along the Vermilion River in Cajun country, this park's bayous and oxbow lakes hold gators that are commonly seen from the trails and the river itself. Spring through fall is the best window for basking gators along the banks. Canoe and kayak rentals get you closer to the water than the walking trails; keep a real distance from any gator you pass. Stay on marked trails rather than cutting down to the riverbank.
