Smith Oaks Sanctuary (High Island)

This High Island bird sanctuary has a rookery pond, sometimes called the gator pond, where alligators gather below the nesting herons and egrets each spring, an unusual and well-known sight during the April and May nesting season. A viewing platform overlooks the pond at a safe distance, which is the only vantage point you need. It gets busy with birders during migration, so arrive early for parking and a clear view. No feeding, and stay on the platform rather than working down toward the water.
