Sheldon Lake State Park

A former fish hatchery turned state park inside Houston's city limits, with an 80-foot observation tower and boardwalk over the lake's wetland ponds where gators are commonly seen. Warmer months bring the most basking activity visible from the tower and boardwalk. It's an easy, close-to-town option if you don't have time for a longer drive to the bigger parks. Stay on the boardwalk and tower platform rather than approaching the pond banks.
